A Florida woman burned by a Starbucks coffee received $100,000 for the injuries she sustained from the 20-ounce cup of coffee.
Starbucks has been ordered to pay Joanne Mogavero $100,000 after she suffered first and second degree burns after a lid came off her coffee and spilled in her lap, according to Fortune.
Mogavero, 43, now has "permanent scarring" from the 190-degree Starbucks coffee that spilled in her lap while she was in the drive-thru of a Starbucks in Jacksonville.
The incident took place in 2014, according to USA Today.
Morgan & Morgan, the law firm representing the mother of three, blamed Starbucks for the spill, arguing that they should do a better job of letting customers know that their coffee lids can sometimes pop off or cause leaks.
During the trial, a Starbucks representative testified, saying the coffee giant gets at least 80 complaints a month regarding issues related to their lids.
These remarks apparently had a profound impact on the jurors, considering the fact that Mogavero received $100,000 in damages at the conclusion of the trial.
The jury awarded $15,000 for medical bills and $85,000 for "pain and disfigurement," USA Today noted.
"My client didn't want sympathy from the jury -- she wanted justice -- and the jury gave it to her with its verdict," said Steve Earle, Mogavero's attorney, according to USA Today. "It was good to see a just result."
