A World War II bomb found in Portsmouth harbor in England by a dredger Wednesday was taken out to sea and detonated.
The British Royal Navy said the bomb appeared to be a 290-pound German SC250. The discovery was made as dredging work was being done in the harbor to make room for the navy's new aircraft carrier to dock, the BBC News reported.
"As always, the Royal Navy stands ready to respond to these call-outs and keep people safe," said Lt. Mike St. Pierre, the officer leading the bomb disposal team, according to the Daily Mail. "Despite being old, these devices can pose a very serious threat."
Several devices have been found in the harbor since dredging work started there last September.
Last November, a similar German bomb was discovered during dredging, forcing the evacuation of the of the Gunwharf Quays shopping center and the Portsmouth historic dockyard, the location of the HMS Victory and the Mary Rose Museum, The Guardian reported.
That bomb was towed to an area east of the Isle of Wight where the Royal Navy's fleet diving squadron conducted a controlled explosion.
On Feb. 17, a British-made Armstrong Whitworth munition was found in the harbor at about 2 a.m. by an excavator doing dredging, The Daily Mail reported. The device was blown up later that morning.
During Wednesday's discovery, the BBC News reported that all ferries were stopped and trains between Portsmouth, Southsea station, and Portsmouth harbor were suspended for a period of time.
There were extensive road closures in the area, affecting access to Gunwharf Quays.
"These bombs are still dangerous despite being several decades old and sitting at the bottom of the seabed for such a long time," Capt. Roger Readwin of the Royal Navy, told CNN.
