A Missouri gunmaker has released two assault-style rifles that comply with New York's gun control laws, joining several other companies that are adapting their stock models to get around the tough measures passed last year.
Black Rain Ordnance
said on its website that its "New York Compliant" AR-15 and AR-10 rifles eliminate features that are illegal under the state's Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement [SAFE] Act, and will feature non-threaded muzzles, 10-round approved magazines, and will not have pistol grips or a collapsing stock to make it more compact.
"With the continual trampling of the 2nd Amendment in New York, Black Rain Ordnance is proud to announce their 'New York Compliant' rifles," the company said. "These rifles feature all of the quality and craftsmanship of the standard BRO-lines, but with the added features that allow for legal possession."
The new weapons remain essentially modified models of the AR-15 and AR-10 rifles, reports the
New York Daily News, making them compliant with the state law pushed through by New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo after the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School killings in Newtown, Conn. Killer Adam Lanza used an AR-15 rifle in the Sandy Hook shootings.
The weapons are expected to range in price from $2,000 to $3,500 when they come out later this year.
Meanwhile, Leah Gunn Barrett, the executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, complained that Black Rain's new weapons "follow the letter of the law but not the spirit, and we’re keeping the governor’s office and the state police on their toes and monitoring this."
Meanwhile, Just Right Carbines, a New York-based gunmaker, has had a compliant carbine rifle out since August,
reports Fox News, and has sold about 100 of them since August.
New York's SAFE Law bans sales of some semi-automatic firearms while requiring those who already own them to have them registered by April 15. The law also bans high-capacity magazines, requires federal background checks during private gun sales, and allows for felony charges for illegal gun possession.
The New York law also requires owners use gun safes or trigger locks when storing weapons and imposes a 10-day waiting period for gun sales. Further, it only allows people to buy one hand gun a month.
