The Arkansas Supreme Court on Friday issued stay to halt the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples in the state, which was the first and only state in the U.S. South to allow gay marriages.

About 500 gay and lesbian couples have married since a county judge last week overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriages. The state's attorney general's office had requested the stay.
