Billy Joel, who declared in June he likes to keep his politics private, wore Star of David badges on his jacket during the encore of a show at Madison Square Garden, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The gesture from the 68-year-old singer and songwriter, whose parents are Jewish, comes in the wake of a violence at a far-right rally and protests in Charlottesville, Virginia.
According to the Times, Joel's representative, asked by the Associated Press about the decision, quoted Irish statesman Edmund Burke: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
Joel's show Monday night was part of a monthly residency he has at New York's Madison Square Garden.
The badges were not the only political commentary, the Times reported.
While performing Scandal's "Goodbye to You" with Patty Smyth, Joel had images of ousted Trump administration officials projected behind him — including former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, former communications director Anthony Scaramucci, former FBI Director James Comey, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara, and former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates.
