Ron Fournier: Exec. Action on Illegals Would Be 'Nuclear Bomb'

President Barack Obama risks further dividing the country if he makes good on a suggestion he might sign an executive order granting work permits to 12 million illegal immigrants, says National Journal's Ron Fournier.

"The fundamental reason he became president was he was promising there's no red state, there's no blue state," Fournier said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "Special Report."

Despite Obama's pledge to bring the country together, divisions have sharpened, he said.

"He's been a polarizing president, and this would be a nuclear bomb that would blow open and make this country even more divided in a way that most Americans just don't want," Fournier said.

Obama's spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday that Obama might sign the action in early September since Congress failed to act on immigration reform before leaving for its August break on Friday.

Liberal MSNBC host Ed Schultz has said the action could be "an electoral death knell for the Democrats" in November's midterm elections.
