Louisville, Kentucky’s police department will fire one of the three officers who shot Breonna Taylor after executing a no-knock warrant on her apartment, the mayor announced on Friday.
Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Rob Schroeder will terminate Officer Brett Hankison, who is currently on administrative reassignment along with the two other officers involved in the incident, which resulted in Taylor’s death. Hankison is accused of “blindly” firing 10 shots into Taylor’s apartment.
"I find your conduct a shock to the conscience. I am alarmed and stunned you used deadly force in this fashion,” Schroeder wrote in a letter to Hankison on Friday, according to the Louisville Courier Journal.
"The result of your action seriously impedes the Department's goal of providing the citizens of our city with the most professional law enforcement agency possible,” he added. “I cannot tolerate this type of conduct by any member of the Louisville Metro Police Department. Your conduct demands your termination."
"Unfortunately, due to a provision in state law that I very much would like to see changed, both the chief and I are precluded from talking about what brought us to this moment, or even the timing of this decision,” Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said on Friday.
