President-elect Donald Trump's withering insult of news outlet BuzzFeed as a "failing pile of garbage" turned into a marketing bonanza for the website.

On Wednesday, at his first news conference since being elected, Trump ripped the outlet for publishing an unverified dossier that alleges Russia has compromising information on him.

Later that afternoon, BuzzFeed launched a limited-time sale of "Our Failing Pile of Garbage" merchandise at its online store — including a T-shirt, bumper stickers and a real garbage can — that sold out by Thursday, the Huffington Post reported

BuzzFeed promised to donate all the proceeds to the Committee to Protect Journalists, a nonprofit that promotes press freedom.

A BuzzFeed spokesperson told AdWeek the flash sale, which lasted less than 12 hours, raised $25,000.

Vanity Fair, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, and the New Yorker have all had subscription rises since the election, the Huffington Post has previously reported
