Caitlyn Jenner said Wednesday it was easier to "come out" as a transgender person than it was to publicly proclaim that's she's a Republican.

The admission came at an event organized by American Unity Fund and the Log Cabin Republicans — two GOP groups that advocate for LGBT equality issues — outside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, USA Today reports

"It was easy to come out as trans. It was hard to come out as Republican," she said to cheers from the audience.

"Thank you, thank you, but they already nominated Donald [Trump] last night," she said. "But I can make a difference."

Jenner's father served in the military, and she noted, "if my dad knew what was going on in this country when he fought so hard, I think he'd be very disappointed."

"Because of that, I feel like our best hope to get back to a constitutional government . . . is a Republican Party," she said. "I'm not giving up on this country. I'm not giving up on this Constitution. I want jobs for everybody."

She also wants more conservatives to change the way they think about LGBT issues.

"I think the Republican Party needs to understand," she said, USA Today reports.
"They need to know people who are trans."

"I would tell Donald [Trump] that there are people out there that have been marginalized for so many years . . . It's about the next generation coming up. We have to provide a safe environment for them."
