A photo of the knife used by the U.S. Capitol attacker was released by the Metropolitan Police Department on Monday.

The photo showed a wooden-handled knife next to an evidence marker. The Metro Police, Capitol Police, and FBI are investigating the attack as a homicide.

The assailant, Noah Green, 25, rammed his Nissan sedan through a barricade near the U.S. Capitol Building around 1 p.m. Friday, crashing into officers, exiting the car with the knife, charging at another officer, who fatally shot him, according to police.

Officer William Evans, an 18-year veteran, was killed in the crash. Both the assailant and the second Capitol Police officer were transported to the hospital by D.C. Fire and EMS. Green was announced dead at the hospital and the second officer was treated and released.

Law enforcement initially believed the suspect might have stabbed Evans – surveillance video did show Green lunging at the officers with a knife – but it has been revealed by the Capitol Police there is no indication he was stabbed, according to Fox News.

The family of Noah Green, 25, issued a statement Saturday claiming he was "not a terrorist by any means," and suffered from "depression and potential mental illness," which might have been related to repeated brain injuries from playing football, according to a report in The Washington Post.

Investigators are working to determine a motive for the attack, noting he was suffering from delusions, paranoia and suicidal thoughts, according to Fox News.

Green was a devoted Nation of Islam follower and a drug addict, suffering from hallucinations, heart palpitations, and headaches.

Green also had reportedly temporarily moved to Botswana, a southern African country, and told his brother "his mind was telling him to basically commit suicide."

His brother also told the Post that Green had needed surgery for an injury from jumping in front of a car.
