Cardinal Timothy Dolan told Fox News on Wednesday that the vandalism done to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City was “a particular kick to the stomach,” amid the ongoing protests in the city.
“It has a special violence to it when it is the house of worship that represents the noblest, uplifting sentiments in the human project, so that's a particular kick in the stomach,” Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, said on “Fox & Friends” Wednesday, adding that the police told him that the church was not “singled out.”
He said, “They defaced a lot of buildings on the Fifth Avenue. That doesn’t lessen the ugliness of what was done but it does put it in perspective.”
Police on Saturday arrested a Queens man who allegedly assisted two unidentified women who are accused of vandalizing St. Patrick’s Cathedral by spray painting expletives and slogans on the building.
Dolan said that the incident “reminds us” that vandalizing local businesses and community centers, “whether it be businesses or especially when it is the church,” is “counterproductive and off-base.”
