President Donald Trump ignited controversy early Saturday morning with a series of tweets criticizing San Juan mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz for her leadership in the wake of Hurricane Maria's devastating effect on Puerto Rico.

"Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico," Trump wrote. "They want everything to be done for them, when it should be a community effort."

Cruz responded, writing that "the goal is one: saving lives." She added that "this is the time to show our 'true colors.' We cannot be distracted by anything else."

Hollywood was also quick to take to Twitter to condemn Trump's remarks in a show of support for Puerto Rico.

"Hamilton" star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is of Puerto Rican descent, fired off a series of tweets supporting Cruz. "You're going straight to hell," he wrote. "She has been working 24/7. You have been GOLFING."

Ron Perlman tweeted a picture of Trump with the caption "I call this my Noriega look." Manuel Noriega was a former dictator of Panama who was overthrown by the U.S.

Lady Gaga emphasized that Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. writing, "I [think] it's clear where the 'poor leadership' lies. Puerto Rico is part of the United States. This is our responsibility." She also asserted that Trump isn't giving Puerto Rico the same attention as other states recently hit by hurricanes because the island territory doesn't receive any electoral votes.

Amber Tamblyn implored voters to remember Trump's "actions," tweeting, "No matter who you are, please remember the actions of this President today when it comes time to vote in 2020. He needs to go. #PuertoRico."

George Takei posted three tweets pointing out Trump's upcoming stay at his golf club, writing, "The irony of Trump golfing and tweeting -- saying the mayor of San Juan wants 'everything to be done for them' -- it's [as] thick as his skull."
