Chelsea Clinton presumably called on Democrats to denounce Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan for comparing Jewish people to "termites" in a recent speech.

Three days after Farrakhan spoke in Detroit to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Million Man March and a Holy Day of Atonement, he posted a clip on Twitter in which he said, "So when they talk about Farrakhan, call me a hater, you know what they do. Call me an anti-Semite. Stop it. I'm anti-termite."

Clinton responded with strong words of her own:

"Comparing Jews to termites is anti-Semitic, wrong and dangerous," she said. "The responsive laughter makes my skin crawl. For everyone who rightly condemned President Trump's rhetoric when he spoke about immigrants 'infesting our country,' this rhetoric should be equally unacceptable to you."

BuzzFeed News reached out to Twitter and inquired whether Farrakhan's words violated the social media company's policy aimed at preventing hate speech. A spokesman confirmed to the website the tweet did not violate its "dehumanizing speech" policy because it is not yet in effect.

The policy, according to Buzzfeed, bans "language that treats others as less than human ... Examples can include comparing groups to animals and viruses (animalistic), or reducing groups to a tool for some other purpose (mechanistic)."

In June, Twitter removed Farrakhan's verified status because of other tweets that it deemed hateful.
