More than half of Americans said they would not get a COVID-19 vaccine before Election Day if one is available, according to a new poll.

Key results in the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) survey:

  • 54% said they would not get the vaccine before Nov. 3, which includes 60% of Republicans and 56% of independents. 50% of Democrats said they would get the vaccine.
  • 62% said they worry that political pressure from the Trump administration would force the FDA to rush the vaccine development and rollout before ensuring its safety and efficacy. 85% of Democrats, 61% of independents, and 35% of Republicans said that.
  • 42% said the CDC is paying "too much attention" to politics while it works on a coronavirus vaccine. 39% said the same about the FDA.
  • 55% disapprove of President Donald Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has infected 6.5 million Americans as the death toll approaches 200,000.

"Public skepticism about the FDA and the process of approving a vaccine is eroding public confidence even before a vaccine gets to the starting gate," KFF president and CEO Drew Altman said.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3 among 1,199 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
