Parkland, Florida, high school shooting survivor-turned-gun-control activist David Hogg is taking a gap year before college to work on the November midterm elections, CNN reported.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior has been accepted at the University of California-Irvine, "but he will not be going to college this year because he's decided to take a year off and work on the midterm elections," his mother, Rebecca Boldrick, told CNN.
She said her son hopes to register and educate new voters and to "get people to vote," CNN reported.
Since the Feb. 14 mass shooting that killed 17 people at the high school, Hogg, 17, has emerged as one of the school's most high-profile advocate for gun control measures. But his college plans hit the headlines last month when Fox News host Laura Ingraham chided him over three rejections by universities to which he had applied.
She later apologized after Hogg urged his 700,000 Twitter followers to pressure companies to stop advertising on her show.
Hogg has said he wants to pursue a career in journalism or filmmaking, CNN reported.
