The number of deaths from coronavirus has surpassed 5,000 in the United States after more than 1,000 died nationwide on Wednesday alone.
According to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Research Center, the death toll in the United States was 5,138 as of early Thursday, with 216,722 diagnosed with the virus.
Researchers are predicting the deaths could surpass 2,000 a day by mid-April, reports USA Today.
Five additional states, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania added or expanded their stay-at-home orders, and Michigan is proposing a 70-day extension of its emergency declaration, which had been set to expire on April 7.
According to the Johns Hopkins report, 941,949 COVID-19 infections have been reported worldwide, 47,522 have died, and 195,929 have recovered, including 8,672 in the United States.
