If a group of Dolly Parton fans get their way, statues of Confederate leaders would be replaced with statues of the country music star.
An online petition calling for the change in statues has nearly 8,000 signatures since it was launched four days ago.
“History should not be forgotten, but we need not glamorize those who do not deserve our praise. Instead, let us honor a true Tennessee hero, Dolly Parton,” Alex Parsons, who started the petition, wrote.
“Aside from her beautiful music, which has touched the hearts and lives of millions of Americans, Dolly Parton's philanthropic heart has unquestionably changed the world for the better.”
Parson praised the music icon’s Dollywood foundation, which has “provided books and scholarships to millions of American children,” along with Parton’s other philanthropic endeavors.
“Dolly Parton has given more to this country and this state than those confederate officers could ever have hoped to take away,” Parsons said.
Across the country, Confederate statues have been removed or desecrated as people call for racial justice and anti-police brutality measures to be put in place in wake of the death of George Floyd, a black man, by a white police officer in Minneapolis last month.
Tennessee has several monuments that honor Nathan Bedford Forrest, who ordered the massacre of 300 black soldiers at Fort Pillow during the Civil War and was later a founder of the Ku Klux Klan, The Hill reports.
