Political correctness is causing the country to "go to hell," as played out in the world of football with the divergent reactions to tweets about players Michael Sam and Tim Tebow, Donald Trump said Monday.

Florida State linebacker DeMarcus Walker brought the contrast center stage with a tweet Saturday:

Sam, the first openly gay football player drafted by the NFL, responded to the news he had been picked up by the St. Louis Rams by kissing his boyfriend. The kiss aired on nationwide television.

In contrast, former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow was mocked after tweeting about his Christianity. While many thought Tebow's statements were "totally fine," Trump said, "He was just criticized so badly."

Miami Dolphins defensive back Don Jones criticized Sam's reaction on Twitter and was promptly fined and suspended while he undergoes training for the comments.

"We've become so politically correct in this country that the country is going to hell. We can't do anything anymore. People are afraid to talk. They're afraid to express their own thoughts," Trump told "Fox & Friends." "I guess you could say there's a double standard. It's sad."

While full of praise for Sam, Trump said he had heard people say they "thought [Sam's] display after he was chosen was inappropriate."

"I think it was great that he got chosen, and he'll be in the NFL. Hopefully, he'll make the team, and he'll be in the NFL, and he'll do well. But I did see his reaction with the birthday cake or the cake. You know, I don't know. If everyone thinks that's a wonderful thing, I guess that's fine with me. But it looked pretty out there to me," Trump told "Fox & Friends."
