The local cost of protecting President-elect Donald Trump and his family while they're in New York City is more than $1 million every day.
According to a CNN report, the New York City Police Department is playing a key role in the Secret Service's protection plan of the Trump family. And that high price tag will be there for a while, since first lady Melania Trump and the couple's 10-year-old son Barron will stay in Manhattan when Trump takes office in order to keep the child in school at least through the end of the school year.
There's always a local cost to keep presidents and presidents-elect safe when they visit their homes away from the White House, but the situation with Trump is more expensive because he lives in the middle of a major metropolitan area.
Local law enforcement often receives money to offset at least some of the costs it incurs while assisting in protection duties for various heads of state. CNN cites data that showed the NYPD received $26 million in reimbursements for the 12-month period that ended June 30, much of which stems from when world leaders visit the United Nations complex in the city.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill spoke with the media Friday and said there is a long-term security plan in place to keep Trump Tower safe — a plan that does not include a permanent shutdown of vehicle traffic on Fifth Avenue, which some had feared.
"It is an unprecedented challenge," de Blasio said, according to CBS New York. "This is a situation the city has never had to deal with before."
