A Twitter user caused an uproar on the social media platform after she posted a photo of a note and bag of candy her best friend received from his Walmart manager commenting, “This is what he just received instead of extra pay or benefits.”

While some tweeted back that Walmart already awarded employees with bonuses while others ripped the company.

The photos showed the bag contained Goldfish crackers, a Rice Krispies treat, candy and a koozie with a picture of a toilet paper roll that says “We Keep Rolling.” The gift bag had a note signed by management that read, “We appreciate all you have done for our store during these trying times. Thank you for being a hero.”

The tweet has been liked more than 157,000 times and has more than 2,500 comments. Other workers chimed in with notes and gifts that they have received from their employers.

An Amazon employee tweeted a picture of a to-go Crystal Light packet that came with a note stating “Big thanks for making LEMONADE out of lemons!”

A Whole Foods worker said employees were given T-shirts that say “hero” on the day the company announced it was no longer providing hazard pay.

The Twitter user who posted the first photo about the Walmart gift bag told Bored Panda that her friend who received the bag wasn't upset about receiving it.

“It’s not about the specific bag itself, that’s not what I was upset about. It’s the overwhelming narrative that giving them thanks is enough. People working at Walmart make poverty wages and often don’t have healthcare. They have to work during the pandemic, they’re not volunteers,” the Twitter user relayed from her friend to Bored Panda.
