Family owned Snake River Farms in Idaho has donated $2 million worth of American Wagyu steaks to California, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The shipment breaks down to about 35,000 steaks that will be made into 10-ounce portions. The farm typically sells to fine dining restaurants. Since many restaurants are closed, Snake River decided to donate the premium meats.
Volunteers with TogetherSF, a group focused on connecting San Francisco residents to resources during the coronavirus crisis, will help deliver the steaks to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, as well as Meals on Wheels, Self Help for the Elderly, and other organizations.
Other food distributors are donating expensive products to food banks in the area as well, according to the Chronicle.
The Mercury News reported the demand is up tenfold at some of the Bay Area’s food banks and distribution sites.
