The backlash against President Barack Obama has borne significant fruit for the GOP, pundit George Will says.
Even as the president is working to shore up his legacy after the difficulties of Obamacare and his unilateral efforts at immigration reform, he has inadvertently boosted his opponents, Will noted,
according to Mediaite.com
"He is the greatest builder of the Republican Party since Ronald Reagan," Will said in an appearance on Fox News.
Will pointed out that under Obama, Republican fortunes had risen across statehouses as well as in Congress. "Republicans control more state legislative chambers than at any time in its history. And the South in particular has some 'appalling' numbers for Democrats under a president who promised sticking by him would work out," Mediaite wrote.
Certain hot-button issues have also helped to spark a backlash and have served to unify GOP interests. Among the most recent are the
climate change accord deal struck by Obama with China, according to Slate, which noted that "the upper ranks of the Republican Party are united in opposition to any mandatory carbon caps, and they have made EPA climate regulations a top target in 2015."
Another broad-sweeping Obama action that will also likely encourage Republicans to come together will be his executive action on immigration,
the Houston Chronicle noted, as GOP lawmakers have said they will use the "power of the purse" to stop what many believe is illegal amnesty.
