Two of the most high-profile gun control organizations of this year are merging; New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action, a grassroots group that sprouted in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, the
Washington Free Beacon reported Friday.
“We started this movement as just 15 mayors committed to protecting our cities — and we’ve since been joined by more than 1,000 mayors and more than 1.5 million Americans from big cities, small towns, and all different walks of life," said the three-term billionaire mayor, who has donated some of his own money to the cause.
“Gun violence is, unfortunately, an issue that affects every community, and coming together with Moms Demand Action, today will strengthen our efforts to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individual and save lives.”
Bloomberg’s group has put its considerable weight behind political candidates and campaigns for stricter gun control laws, particularly in Colorado, Virginia and Chicago.
Moms Demand Action, which now has 130,000 members, was started by mother of five, Shannon Watts, after the Sandy Hook shootings in Connecticut. A major triumph included successfully lobbying Starbucks to ban firearms at its coffee shops.
