Houston Texans' star defensive end J.J. Watt, who became well-known for using social media to raise millions impacted by Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area last fall, will pay for the funeral expenses for the 10 people, mostly students, who were killed Friday morning at the shooting at Santa Fe High School.
The team has confirmed that Watt will pick up the bill, reports ESPN, after a source told KHOU 11 in Houston that the star was willing to help out.
Shortly after the shooting, Watt tweeted there were just two words to sum up his feelings about the shooting: "Absolutely horrific."
Watt's team also issued a statement about the shootings, saying that the organization is "saddened" and extends its "heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families and all those affected. We are grateful for the brave first responders, law enforcement officials and medical personnel. The Texans family will continue to pray for our neighbors."
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported that nine out of the 10 people killed were students.
Watt last fall used the power of social media to raise money to help people in the Houston area. His efforts started with a video announcing that he was trying to raise $200,000, and that he would match the first $100,000 donated. In less than three weeks, the donations passed the $37 million mark.
He eventually received the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, which honors football players for both their on-the-field excellence and their charity work off the field, notes USA Today.
In addition to Watts' offer, a local graveyard has also offered free burial plots for all those who lost their lives in the shooting, KHOU reported.
