While campaigning for Democratic candidates in the final days before Election Day, Hillary Clinton has trumpeted liberal policies, such as increasing the minimum wage and pay equity, but for comedian Jon Stewart she doesn't lean far enough left.
"Hillary strikes me as competent. She's certainly very bright. But she's a little hawkish for me," the host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show"
told New York magazine.
Stewart also said he was not impressed with the argument Clinton made during a July appearance on his show that the fault of American foreign policy was in the messaging.
"I think that, honestly, [she] was somebody trying out a campaign theme in the way that I might try and work out a comedy bit with some friends. I think she came over and was like, 'Here's my campaign theme: retelling America's greatness to the world. America's got to tell its story.' Well, America's story is complex," he said.
Before settling on correspondent Chuck Todd, NBC had considered Stewart to take over the reins of "Meet the Press" from David Gregory.
It is not the first time that Stewart, who is leaving Comedy Central after 16 years, has skewered the former secretary of state.
In June, he poked fun at Hillary Clinton after she told ABC News' Diane Sawyer that she and Bill "came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt" and "struggled to piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea's education."
In September, Stewart mocked Clinton's attendance at Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin's steak fry and in an expletive-laden monologue criticizing her noncommitment to a presidential campaign.
