Liberals Fight Bipartisan Effort on Social Security

Any budget expert will tell you that Social Security expenses need to be trimmed if the nation is to address its burgeoning debt burden. But liberal House Democrats are resisting the effort of a bipartisan group of six senators to reform the entitlement program, The Hill reports.

That’s despite the fact that the senators are working to implement recommendations made by President Barack Obama’s own fiscal commission.

“Divorce this conversation about deficit reduction from Social Security and making it a better program!” Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif., told a group of Social Security advocates on Capitol Hill Thursday, according to The Hill. Becerra, the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Social Security subcommittee, was a member of the fiscal commission but voted against its recommendations.
