A police officer involved in Breonna Taylor’s controversial shooting death has been fired, reports the Louisville Courier Journal.
Brett Hankison was terminated Tuesday, Louisville Metro Police announced, and the other two police officers involved in the shooting are still on administrative leave.
Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, was killed three months ago when police broke down her apartment door in an attempted drug sting and shot her six times. Her boyfriend thought officers were intruders and fired one shot as they entered. All three officers fired shots in return. Hankison is accused of “blindly” firing 10 rounds into Taylor’s apartment.
The no-knock warrant was issued because authorities suspected a man involved in a drug ring of receiving packages at her home.
Taylor’s case, which is being investigated by the FBI’s Louisville office, has been a fixture in the recent protests on police brutality.
"It's another good, small step," said Sam Aguiar, an attorney for Taylor's family. "We won't be satisfied until rightful charges are brought against him, until charges are brought against everyone responsible for Breonna's death."
