President Donald Trump on Monday awarded his close ally Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor a civilian can receive, The Hill reports.

Trump presented Jordan with the medal during a closed-door ceremony at the White House at the same time Democrats in the House moved to impeach him for a second time after the storming of the Capitol last week, which left multiple people dead.

Jordan received the medal for his defense of Trump during his first impeachment and for the duration of the Russia investigation by "confronting senior Justice Department officials for obstructing Congress and exposing the fraudulent origins of the Russia collusion lie," according to a statement from White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

The statement described Jordan as "an inspiration to freedom-loving Americans everywhere and has distinguished himself as one of the most consequential members of Congress of his generation."

The president has not made a public appearance since his followers rioted last Wednesday.
