Report: Helmet Camera May Have Caused Schumacher's Injuries

The GoPro camera that has provided investigators with crucial footage of the Dec. 29 ski crash that severely injured Formula One driver Michael Schumacher may have caused his head injuries, reports the Daily Mail.

During an interview with radio station Europe 1, Formula One commentator Jean-Louis Moncet said Schumacher's son had told him the famed driver was waking up slowly from his coma.

Moncet then added: 'The problem for Michael was not the hit, but the mounting of the GoPro camera that he had on his helmet that injured his brain."

Questions about whether the GoPro camera contributed to the seriousness of the crash were first raised in February.

According to a report in London's Daily Telegraph, experts from ENSA, the world-renowned ski and climbing academy in the French ski resort of Chamonix, were conducting tests to determine whether the camera may have worsened the blow to Schumacher's head by causing his helmet to shatter when he hit a rock.

"But why did it explode on impact? Here the camera comes into question. The laboratory has been testing to see if the camera weakened the structure," an investigator told the paper.

The camera was not damaged in the crash.

Schumacher was skiing in the Alps with his family on the morning of Dec. 29 when he decided to go off the main run. Investigators told The Telegraph that he struck a rock and "catapulted onto another, crashing his head with such force that his helmet split in two."

Shortly after the crash, a local policeman confirmed to BBC News that Schumacher's skis were not the cause of the crash, saying they were in "perfect condition."

Schumacher, 45, is currently under care at his home in Switzerland.

MarketWatch reported that shares of GoPro fell 7 percent in midday trading Monday.
