Former President Barack Obama on Saturday shared a Nelson Mandela quote in response to the violence and unrest in Charlottesville, Va., that left three people dead and at least 34 injured.

White nationalists were protesting the city's decision to take down a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee at a city park when they clashed with counter-protestors. Fighting, shoving and racial taunting prompted Gov. Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency and the National Guard had to join the police in clearing the area.

Soon after, a car plowed into a crowd near the downtown mall, killing one and injuring 19.

President Donald Trump denounced the "egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides," but was criticized for not condemning the white nationalists directly.
