The United States was founded on a predominantly Christian world view that is quickly disappearing, Pat Buchanan says.
Buchanan appeared on Fox News Channel's
"Hannity" on Wednesday and responded to a statement issued on Sunday by the White House noting the "achievements and contributions" of Muslim Americans "to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy."
The statement coincided with
Eid al-Fitr, the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
"There are brave, honorable, good Muslims in this country who have come here legally," Buchanan said. But, he added, "99 percent of the folks in the United States at the time the Constitution was signed were Protestant Christians, 1 percent Catholics, one-tenth of 1 percent Jewish."
The United States, he said, was a non-religious state but predominantly Christian when founded, though it is ceasing to be so.
"I don't think that's a good thing for America or the world," he said.
