By a margin of 51-45 percent, Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump's executive order temporarily banning people from entering the U.S. from seven designated nations — but the results are sharply divided along party lines, according to a CBS News poll.
Here are the survey highlights:
- 85 percent of Republicans approve of the travel ban, compared to 12 percent who disapprove.
- 12 percent of Democrats approve of the ban, compared to 85 percent who do not.
- 36 percent of those polled say the temporary ban will make the U.S. safer, while another 36 percent say it will make the U.S. less safe. 22 percent believe it will have no effect.
- 40 percent say they approve of Trump's job performance, while 48 percent disapprove.
"President Trump's first approval rating is a historic low when compared with other presidents during their first month in office, and he is the first president since 1953 to have more Americans disapprove than approve of the job he is doing so early in his term," said the report accompanying the results.
Here is how the rest of the poll results break down:
- 56 percent of those poll have no opinion on whether Neil Gorsuch, Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, should be confirmed, while 27 percent favor confirmation and 14 percent oppose it.
- 54 percent of Americans say they are looking for a Supreme Court justice who would uphold Roe v. Wade, while 30 percent want someone who would vote to overturn it.
