Americans expect Donald Trump to keep his campaign promises on repealing Obamacare and a variety of other issues, a Harvard poll released to The Hill reveals.
The website reports that 64 percent of registered voters polled by Harvard University's Center for American Political Studies and the National Research Group, believe the president-elect will be either very or somewhat effective in fulfilling his campaign promises, not just on repealing Obamacare, but on immigration and cutting taxes.
"I think that there were a considerable number of policies, particularly as it relates to taxes, infrastructure and some but not all of his immigration and healthcare stuff around which he could build a very strong consensus," The Hill quotes Mark Penn, managing partner and president of The Stagwell Group, which oversees the National Research Group
Here is how the poll breaks down, according to The Hill:
- 54 percent believe Trump will repeal and replace the Affordable Health Care Act, but only 46 percent approve of the idea.
- A whopping 78 percent approve of his promise to improve the nation's infrastructure and 53 percent believe he'll keep it.
- On his promise to stop immigration from Syria and other terror-prone regions, 53 percent say they trust Trump will uphold his campaign pledge. A total of 57 percent approve of the plan.
- Only 40 percent believe Trump will build a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border.
- A vast majority — 90 percent — back deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records.
But The Hill notes there appeared to be some support for allowing certain illegal immigrants to remain in the country.
- 65 percent would allow illegal immigrants, who pay their taxes and have been in the country for five years, to apply for citizenship or residency
- Just less than half of those polled say immigrants make the U.S. less safe, while 54 percent disagreed with that statement.
- 21 percent say the country needs to impose a Christian religious test on new immigrants, while 65 percent believe incoming immigrants should face an English language test.
Poll results also revealed more people have an unfavorable view of the president-elect than a favorable view.
"Donald Trump has a big task of consolidating his support to get above 50 percent support," Penn is quoted by The Hill. "It's very difficult to be a president and have below 50 percent favorability."
