The U.S. Postal Service is increasing its same-day deliveries in an effort to compete with other courier services such as FedEx and UPS as well as Amazon.com.
Postal workers in New York City are now collecting items such as fish and bottled water to deliver along their mail route,
The Wall Street Journal is reporting.
New York's postmaster general, Megan Brennan, says that the move is part of an effort to increase the postal service's competitiveness.
"Clearly, the consumer demand is such that we all want the package today," Brennan told the Journal. "So we’re being responsive to that."
Brennan said that she is now asking Congress to allow the postal service to deliver alcohol, increase grocery delivery as well as allow for more deliveries on Sunday.
According to the Journal, the postal service needs to find more ways to increase its bottom line as there was a 2.2 percent drop in first-class mail in the first three quarters of the year. First-class mail is the postal service's most profitable product.
While parcel delivery has increased by double digits for the postal service, it still makes up only a fifth of its total revenue.
