The Republican National Committee is still figuring out if and how the press will be able to cover convention events in Charlotte.
According to NBC News, the RNC is “still working through” whether it will allow press to attend and cover events in-person.
“No final decision has been made and we are still working through logistics and press coverage options. We are working with the parameters set before us by state and local guidelines regarding the number of people who can attend events,” RNC communications director Michael Ahrens told NBC News in a statement.
Ahrens added the committee is considering a livestream as “one of the press coverage options.”
The RNC has been moved and changed several times amid the coronavirus pandemic.
It is unknown whether President Donald Trump will even attend the convention. A RNC official told NBC News Trump may go to Charlotte on Aug. 24 to thank a smaller footprint of delegates in a private meeting.
There also hasn’t been a final decision on where Trump will accept his formal re-nomination on Aug. 27.
The president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, AP reporter Zeke Miller, said the idea of a closed press convention would be an “an ill-advised decision.”
“Hopefully they’ll give the American people the access they deserve,” he tweeted of the GOP.
