The fraction of registered voters who oppose the Trump administration's demand for all schools and colleges to reopen in the fall is approaching two-thirds.

Results from the latest Politico/Morning Consult poll:

  • 59% said they oppose reopening schools for in-person instruction, up from 53% last month in the same poll.
  • 56% said they are opposed to fully opening daycare facilities, an increase from 53% in July.
  • 57% are against fully opening colleges, up from 50% last month.
  • 14% said federal funding to schools should be decreased if schools are only open for remote learning, a figure that included 23% of Republicans.

President Donald Trump has said multiple times that he would like to see schools reopen for full in-classroom learning as the country grapples with the coronavirus pandemic. He has since softened his stance a bit, conceding that some schools will likely not be able to fully open.

Many schools, however, are opting to either be fully or partially remote over fears that the virus will further spread among students and teachers.

Students and staff members at a school in Georgia, for example, have fallen ill with COVID-19 after a photo of a crowded hallway went viral on social media.
