Relentless Snow Brings out the Best in Easterners

MILFORD, Conn. — The barrage of snowstorms on the East Coast is bringing neighbors and strangers together in an effort to beat back what's shaping up to be a brutal winter.

A builder in Connecticut used his skid loader after Thursday's storm to plow his neighbors' driveways — inspiring a teenage boy to show up to help for free.

In Maryland, a good Samaritan handed out water and M&Ms to stranded drivers. And the mayor of Philadelphia urged residents to "be kind" and help one another out.

A Quinnipiac (quin-ih-PEE'-ak) University sociologist says it's true that this winter's frequent storms may be leading people to interact more and help one another cope.

Assistant professor Lauren Ross says "people are really stepping up" because of a "collective pattern we're experiencing."
