The percentage of Americans who view the coronavirus as a high threat to the nation has more than doubled (now 71%)  from a month ago (34%), according to a USA Today/Ipsos Poll released on Monday.

There has been a similar large increase in those who believe there is now a high threat to the global economy (now 76% from 47%), to the stock market (68% from 47%) and to "you personally” (29% from 15%).

Other results from the survey show:

  • Sixty-nine percent of Americans support a nationwide lockdown through the end of April. Only 21% oppose. The idea has the backing of 80% of Democrats and 62% of Republicans.
  • Almost all Americans  (92% to 4%) want the federal government to make the coronavirus test widely available.
  • About 80% support imposing mandatory quarantines for those who have traveled to a foreign country and temporarily stopping immigration.
  • About 70% want to ground all international flights, while 49% want to do the same to domestic flights. Thirty-four percent do not want to completely halt domestic flights.
  • More than 80% back expanding paid sick leave so more workers would be eligible, while 60% support temporary financial help for airlines and other affected industries.
  • Governors as a group are more highly trusted (69%) to deal with the crisis than the president (44%).

The timing of the poll last month, on March 10-11, was a few days before President Donald Trump declared a national emergency. The latest survey was taken April 9-10. Both online surveys polled 1,005 adults nationwide. The credibility interval is +/-3.5 percentage points.
