Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man who has the first case of Ebola diagnosed inside the United States, reportedly aided a pregnant woman in his home country who died from the disease hours later, The New York Times reports.

Duncan helped carry the woman into a hospital on Sept. 15, family members told the Times. That was just four days before he boarded a plane and came to the United States.

He was diagnosed with Ebola on Sunday and is being treated in isolation in a Dallas hospital.

According to the Times, Duncan rode in a taxi with family members to take Marthalene Williams, 19, to a hospital. Duncan, along with Williams' parents and brother, helped carry her into the hospital because she was unable to walk.

There was no room in the Ebola or maternity wards to admit her, so they took her back home, where she died in the middle of the night.

Her brother, Sonny Boy Williams, has since died of Ebola, and other family members are sick.

Duncan was aware of the woman's death, and initially showed up at a hospital on Friday with symptoms, said his sister, Mai Wureh. He told the triage nurse he was from Liberia, but that information was not passed on to other medical staff. He was sent home with antibiotics.
