The chief information officer who supervised technical development of the troubled HealthCare.gov website is retiring — the first official with ties to the botched rollout to leave the Obama administration, it was reported Wednesday.

The official, Tony Trenkle, will step down Nov. 15 "to take a position in the private sector," said an email message circulated among agency employees, The New York Times reported.

The abrupt departure was confirmed by officials at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where Trenkle was CIO.

But a spokesman would not elaborate on why Trenkle was stepping down, saying, "Tony made a decision that he was going to move to the private sector," ABC News reported.
