Trump Says He Didn't Know About Stormy Daniels Payment

President Donald Trump said on Thursday he did not know about a $130,000 payment made in 2016 by his personal attorney to adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about a sexual encounter she says she had with Trump.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he did not know where his attorney, Michael Cohen, got the money to pay Daniels. Cohen has said he paid Daniels out of his own pocket.

Trump spoke to reporters for the first time about the payment, made shortly before the 2016 election, to secure Daniels' silence.

He told reporters they would have to ask Cohen about why the lawyer made the payment. Cohen has said the money came from his own pocket.

Cohen's action has prompted questions about possible campaign finance law violations.

Last month, Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, sued Cohen to try to get released from a nondisclosure agreement she signed in October 2016.

The White House has denied that Trump had sex with Daniels. Daniels has said she and Trump had sex once in 2006, when he was married, but that they kept in touch for a period of time.
