One month after the House GOP's healthcare bill fell flat because of a lack of support, the White House said Monday President Donald Trump wants healthcare reform done right — and that means there won't be an "artificial deadline" put in place.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer was asked about the topic during Monday's press briefing and said the ball is in lawmakers' court.
"I think the vote is gonna get scheduled when [House] speaker [Paul] Ryan and [House Majority Leader Kevin] McCarthy and congressman [Steve] Scalise determine they have the votes and they feel confident," Spicer said.
"I think we want to make sure we've got the votes and are headed in the right direction before putting some kind of artificial deadline."
Later in the briefing, Spicer was asked if a deal on healthcare could get accomplished next week.
"His goal isn't to fit it into a finite timetable as he mentioned on Friday," Spicer said. "If it happens this week, that's great. If it happens next week, that's great too. The goal is to get it done and get it done right. So we're not going to jam it through just for the sake of it."
Opposition from the House Freedom Caucus led to a planned March 24 vote on the American Health Care Act being canceled at the last minute. Since then, Republican Party leaders have been working to garner more support for the bill.
