Washington, D.C., police officials say they are "fully prepared" to maintain safety during President Donald Trump's inauguration next Monday, while the FBI added it's not tracking any "credible threats" in connection with the event.
Mayor Muriel Bowser held a press conference Monday to discuss security measures for the inauguration. She was joined by district and federal authorities.
"We are not currently tracking any specific or credible threats to the inaugural ceremony or to the Capitol complex," FBI special agent David Sundberg said. "We will continue to work closely with our partners to share information and identify and disrupt any threat that may emerge."
U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger said that besides the expected 250,000 ticketed inauguration guests, "folks showing up to participate in a number of demonstrations will be in the downtown area."
"The biggest threat, I think for all of us, remains the lone actor," Manger said. "Just in the past week, while President [Jimmy] Carter was lying in state, we had two lone actors show up at the Capitol, one trying to bring in knives and a machete, and another one who I believe was trying to disrupt the proceedings by setting their car on fire."
The U.S. Secret Service's Matt McCool, special agent in charge for the Washington Field Office, discussed some security measures.
"All attendees will undergo screening. Designated check points will be set up for members of the public interested in attending the inauguration," McCool said.
He added that temporary flight restrictions in and out of D.C. will be implemented, although authorities will use drones to patrol the area. Also, more than 30 miles of fencing will be used.
Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said more than 4,000 cops from across the U.S. will assist her officers, as well as 7,800 National Guard members.
"We're prepared. The men and women of the Metropolitan Police Department, D.C. government and our partners are fully prepared for the 60th presidential inauguration," Smith said.
People planning to attend to the inauguration were encouraged to go to Inauguration.DC.gov for a map and instructions on parking and other security measures.
