President Donald Trump on Sunday condemned the stabbing attack against five New York Jews as they lit the candles for Hanukkah on Saturday night.
Calling the incident “horrific,” the president tweeted that “We must all come together to fight, confront, and eradicate the evil scourge of anti-Semitism. Melania and I wish the victims a quick and full recovery.”
The alleged attacker, Thomas Grafton, was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he went into the home of Rabbi Chaim Leibish Rottenberg in Monsey, north of New York City, and stabbed five Hasidic Jews as they lit the candles for the seventh night of Hanukkah, The Hill reported.
The attack is the latest in a string of anti-Semitic incidents in the New York area recently.
On Friday, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in a tweet that there would be an increased police presence in Jewish areas of the city due to the large number of attacks against the community.
The mayor added that “Anyone who terrorizes our Jewish community WILL face justice.”
