Most of the fencing put up around Lafayette Square will be coming down by Wednesday, The Washington Post reports.
The fencing has kept protesters out of the park just north of the White House ever since they were driven out with pepper spray and rubber bullets. Critics have slammed the White House for the action since protests at the time were peaceful, though they had been violent in previous nights, including the night before when a basement area of St. John’s Episcopal Church had been set on fire by protesters.
Crowds have continued to gather outside the fencing to protest the killing of George Floyd and to call for reforms in policing. Memorials of black men and women who have been killed by police have been affixed to the fencing.
A spokeswoman for the National Parks Service did not tell the Post what would become of the artwork when the fencing was taken down. But she did say some fencing would remain in areas where safety hazards exist.
