JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A blast of winter weather has gripped parts of the South, bringing snow, sleet and freezing rain that coated bridges and roads in some areas.

Joanne Culin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Sunday that the weather is expected to worsen in Mississippi and Louisiana throughout the day Sunday and into Monday morning.

She said the weather system could push into Alabama late Sunday and early Monday. Georgia also could start getting rain and snow by Sunday night.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said ice had begun accumulating on bridges and roads in numerous counties Sunday morning, creating hazardous driving conditions.

Forecasters expected the worst of the weather Sunday in Mississippi and Louisiana along the Interstate 20 corridor.
