LIGNET: Iran Planning Attacks on US Power Grid

The threat of a cyber attack on the United States is growing, with Iran emerging as the nation most likely to launch such an attack on critical infrastructure systems, including the U.S. power grid. Iran ’s cyber warfare capabilities lag behind those of China and Russia, but one expert who recently testified on Capitol Hill noted that “what it lacks in capability, it makes up for in intent.”

The U.S. power grid is the largest, most complex “machine” ever created by mankind -- and also one of the most vulnerable to cyber attacks. The federal government and industry are working hand-in-hand to modernize the nation’s power delivery system with “smart grid” technology, but this is also increasing the grid’s vulnerability to attacks.
