Israel has decided to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to a report in Saudi news site al-Arabiya.
Citing a "European official" the news site said, “Israel has made the decision to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities." The official reportedly told al-Arabiya that the attack could come in the coming months, based on "developments in the Middle East over the last several months."
The official did not say whether the United States, under newly inaugurated President Donald Trump, is expected to play a role in the strikes, either actively or by providing the specialized munitions needed to carry out such an attack.
However, the official revealed that several European countries had already begun talks with the incoming Trump administration, in an attempt to explore diplomatic options to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons in lieu of a military strike.
Last week, Iranian Vice President Mohammad Javad Zarif accused Israel of carrying out an attempted attack against his country, claiming that Israel infiltrated the supply chain for procuring the centrifuges necessary to refine uranium, placing explosives within the devices.
Over the past few weeks, several Israeli politicians and leaders have called for a preemptive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, arguing that an unprecedented window of opportunity has been created by the severe blows to Iranian proxies in the region over the last few months, as well as the wearing of Iran’s air defenses following the Israeli strikes in October 2024.
While Iran has recently engaged in several discussions with European nations regarding its nuclear program, which it maintains is only for civilian use, it has also conducted a series of high-profile military exercises near the Natanz nuclear facility, aimed at demonstrating its ability to protect the site.
Iran also released several videos depicting underground military sites, apparently intended to send a message to Israel and the U.S. that it has prepared for a strike against its facilities.
Iran is the only country in the world to have enriched uranium as high as 60% purity without having a nuclear weapons program. Experts have warned that its large stockpile of uranium enriched to this level of purity could enable the country to rapidly enrich the remaining material to the purity required for a nuclear warhead.
Over the weekend, The Wall Street Journal reported on recent talks in Geneva between representatives of Britain, France, and Germany together with Iranian officials to discuss the possibility of a new nuclear agreement to include the U.S.
According to that report, the Europeans told their Iranian counterparts that any new nuclear agreement with Trump would have to include Iran's ballistic missile project, which the Iranians rejected.
United Arab Emirates news site Erem News reported Monday that Iran is seeking Iraqi mediation to facilitate talks with the United States after Trump's election, especially following reports that Trump plans a return to the strict sanctions of his first term.
Meanwhile, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., recently told CBS news that he does not believe a diplomatic agreement with Iran is possible.
"I don't think diplomacy works," Graham declared during an interview on "Face the Nation," calling Iran a "religious Nazi regime.”
“I am hoping there will be an effort by Israel to decimate the Iran nuclear program, supported by the United States. And if we don't do that it will be a historical mistake," Graham said.
"There's a one in trillion chance you'll degrade the Iranian nuclear program through diplomacy," Graham told Margaret Brennan Sunday on the popular CBS political talk show, "Face the Nation."
"There's a 90% chance you'll degrade it through military action by Israel, supported by the United States. So, the next topic I will be engaging in with President Trump is to take this moment in time to decimate the Iran nuclear program because they're so exposed."
Lindsey's remarks were echoed by Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., who posted a response on 𝕏, saying, "One Hundred Percent."
