Best Acne Medications

Wednesday, 06 April 2011 05:10 PM EDT

Zits, pimples, blemishes, acne. No matter what you choose to call them this skin condition is annoying, persistent, and causes a lot of distress for those that suffer from it. The most common cause of acne is hormonal changes. This is why you see it commonly in teenagers. However, anyone of any age can experience outbreaks.

Acne actually occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and oil. Depending on the location of the blockage it can appear as a blackhead or a whitehead. Blackheads are dark acne that is located closer to the surface of the skin whereas whiteheads contain pus and bulge from a deeper area. Acne can appear anywhere hair follicles are present on the face, neck, chest, and/or body.

You should first determine your skin type when you are searching for the best way to treat acne. Various acne products are designed to work for dry, oily, normal, or combination skin. The ingredients in acne products vary depending on your skin type.

There are many ways to manage, prevent, or cure acne including:

Prescription Medications: Some oral prescription medications that can help reduce or eliminate acne include oral contraceptives and antibiotics. Topical prescriptions can include azelaic acid and sodium sulfacetamide. These are common treatments prescribed by doctors and dermatologists.

Over-the-Counter Treatments for acne include products like Proactive and Clearasil. These products contain ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid used for getting rid of all kinds of acne.

Natural Remedies: Herbal remedies, multivitamins, and other supplements are becoming a common way to treat acne. Zinc, Vitamin A, D, C, and B are some of the best components for getting rid of acne.

Diet: Another helpful way to prevent, manage, or combat acne is to make changes in your diet. Foods to avoid include white bread, dairy, sugar, fried and fatty foods, junk food, and chocolate.

Sunlight: Getting out in the sun is a great way to get rid of acne. It's a free and natural resource that aids in killing the bacteria that can cause acne.

Each person is different so finding the best acne medication for you requires research, trial and error, and in severe cases a diagnosis by a dermatologist.
