Does My Wife Have Alzheimer's Disease? Warning Signs Loved Ones Can't Ignore

By    |   Monday, 23 February 2015 11:31 PM EST

When your wife forgets about something once in a while, it doesn't necessarily signal a serious mental disorder. Alzheimer's disease symptoms usually interfere with her life and may disrupt your life, as well.

Identifying the early signs of Alzheimer's helps with a successful treatment plan. Some symptoms may signal other problems, but you can take care of those difficulties by understanding the symptoms your wife might be going through and seeking medical care if necessary.

If you find that your wife suddenly loses track of time, it could suggest she's developing Alzheimer's. For example, she might not know what day it is or what is actually happening right now. She might be unable to understand her surroundings and get lost easily in familiar places, says the Mayo Clinic.

Has she repeatedly made poor decisions? Does she spend money unwisely or give it away, which doesn’t seem like something she would normally do? Does she dress improperly for warm or cold weather conditions? Alzheimer's disease symptoms include lapses in judgment.

Memory loss is a common symptom, especially if your wife has recently developed a tendency to be forgetful. She might forget about appointments she made or events she was supposed to attend. She could misplace items by placing them in unusual locations or begin to forget names of people she knows well.

Problem solving and daily tasks become challenging for Alzheimer’s patients. Do you notice she doesn’t know how to cook the meals or make the treats she once did easily? She might find it difficult to follow simple tasks or can't keep track of bills. Warning signs include losing her abilities to follow steps that were once familiar, says WebMD.

Vision problems can be related to a variety of disorders, such as cataracts. However, if your wife cannot tell colors apart or has trouble judging distance, it could be an effect of Alzheimer's.

Social withdraw and depression are among Alzheimer's disease symptoms. If your wife seems to lack the motivation she once had or becomes less involved in activities she once enjoyed, Alzheimer's could be the cause. Mood changes result from the disease because patients might begin to feel isolated. Distrust in others, wandering, irritability and even delusions are some of the symptoms your wife might develop.
